Downton Abbey's Surprising Character Addition

'Time of Death,' dying as it really is | Media Life Magazine

Just reading this review of Showtimes' documentary "Time of Death" made us feel there was a pit in our stomach. However, as Tom Conroy notes at the end of his review "everyone will have something to gain from "Time of Death",  we do believe that will be true.  We've marked our calendars.  'Time of Death,' dying as it really is | Media Life Magazine

Bob Barker Returns to The Price Is Right for #90

Image
Bob Barker , the former host of CBS' "The Price Is Right" for 35 years, will return to the show on December 12th to mark his 90th birthday. Barker's appearance will include the "presentation of a special showcase to mark the occasion."  Who does showcases better than Bob Barker ! Anyway, we remember Barker , who always appeared trim and healthy, and can't wait to see how he looks now. Perhaps Barker proves 90 is the new 70!

Netflix Taking it Up A Notch

We're really impressed with Netflix. It's really opening up doors to content providers and changing the way we watch TV, and now perhaps movies. Netflix Flirts With a New Idea: “Big” Movies at Your House, the Same Day They’re in Theaters

How To Be Popular 50s Style is New Again

Movie Deals Kudos to  DreamWorks  for spotting this one! We love this story (see below) and the eventual movie should be cute and fun. The movie will be based on an 8th grader's,  Maya Van Wagenen  now fifteen,  journal, which she wrote as she followed advice from  Betty Cornell’s  "Glamour Guide For Teens." Wow, there's a name so fitting from the 50's. Who would have thought in this age of technology we would be looking to the past (let's say a time when ugly landline phones and typewriters with ribbon were the norm) for current entertainment. Perhaps we should get the book too. DreamWorks Acquires 8th Grader’s Journal On How ’50s Advice Guide Made Her Popular

FLOTUS Michelle Obama Wearing the Perfect Stand-In for Black

Image
Fashion Forward This is what we mean by Stand-In for Black . The FLOTUS '  deep rich purple has the visual impact of black along with a toned down pop of color. The LBD has its place in our wardrobe, but it's been over used and we're looking to branch out. Is anyone else getting bored with the black theme? We know all-black and the LBD is chic and can hide a multitude of sins, but deep rich purples, burgundy and aubergine add a little excitement and make you feel just a little bit royal too!

TV Pilot Spending Increasing Among the Big 4

Image
TELEVISION We thought Cynthia Littleton, editor-in-chief of TV at Variety, wrote a great piece last week (see below). It seems the nets are feeling the heat from cable, which in a smart move, is increasingly producing original programs. The cable and online option for producers, who probably would have never been considered for a network deal, has created more opportunities everyone and proves that competition is always healthy. We love the idea that there are so many outlets for writers and producers that never existed before.   TV Networks’ Pilot Spending Reflects Cable Competition http://t.co/HuAKoAgZph — ConversationCircle (@ConversationCir) October 28, 2013

eBay Aquires Rival Hoping for a Local Edge

We read this story (see below)  and were reminded of an experience one of our members had. In discussing the acquisition of its  rival Devon Wenig, president of eBay Marketplaces, commented "People like to shop locally." We said, wait a minute, not so fast! A few years ago a frustrated member purchased a laundry cart she found on Amazon. The company that manufactured the cart was in California. She had purchased 3 carts locally over the years and they all fell apart sometimes within weeks. She vowed at that point, no more cheap carts, thus the Amazon search. Kerry Washington beat Olivia Pope in our Viewing Diary

Image
We must admit we were torn last night between watching the final half hour of Project Runway and switching to Scandal . (To be honest we tried switching during commercials, it didn't work out so well.) After all, Kerry Washington was a guest judge last night. As you know, we opted to DVR Scandal . However, judging from the ratings, Scandal is one of the hottest shows on broadcast TV right now. Scandal turned in a 3.3 rating in adults 18-49, up 6% from last week. Scandal is expected to finish the week as the top rated broadcast drama for adults 18-49 (Live+same day). We'll play catch up over the weekend. SPOILER ALERT: Dom Streater winner of Project Runway Season 12!

Image
Dom Streater This was so deserved. First we'd like to say Project Runway  was fresh his season. We really enjoyed Tim Gunn's expanded role, the designers and the drama! However, after all of the drama and contestants who seemed promising, Dom Streater, a Philadelphia native and graduate of Moore College of Art,  was crowned winner, with guest judge Kerry Washington looking on, of Project Runway Season 12. ( See video below. )  Streater was able to make prints and patterns interesting again. We thought Streater's designs made you feel happy and lifted your spirit, that's quite an  accomplishment! It's time to get out of black and into a great print! We can't wait for Streater's designs to hit the market. Related : A Redesigned Project Runway Season 12

What are the Young and Wealthy Watching?

Image
According to Nielsen's ratings the  fifteen shows that are popular with this upscale bunch include "Modern Family" "Big Bang Theory" and "Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D". Why does this matter? These young adults are a key demo, 18-49 with an annual income of $100, 000 or more. These two components equal money to burn in an advertiser's mind (and probably in reality), and ABC is leading with this group. The fact that Modern Family is number one with this demo, says something positive about this group of young adults. Check out this Los Angeles Times piece. Kerry Washington to SNL NOV 2

Image
We're not sure if the timing of Kerry Washington's  appearance is more uncomfortable for her or the suits at NBC's SNL. Washington's booking announcement comes in the middle of a  "no black female cast member" controversy for SNL. Awkward, to say the least! Ed Helms Producing Comedy Written By Aisha Muharrar

Image
Ed Helms ', star of "The Office," is producing a new comedy project for NBC that's written by Aisha Muharrar. Universal TV, where Helms has a first-look deal, is producing. Most television viewers probably don't know who Muharrar is, but we think she may be the Shonda Rhimes of comedy one day. Muharrar's project centers on a gifted teen that wants to be the next Oprah, but lacks the skills and experience, so she uses her family and friends as case studies. (Sounds like fun if the show can nail down the essence of what made Oprah, Oprah!)   Muharrar is currently a producer on "Parks and Recreation." She was also a staff writer for Sit Down, Shut Up, an animated comedy.

Nicolas Ghesquière Goes To Louis Vuitton

Image
Fashion Forward There had been an old saying in Hollywood in which people who were let go from prominent positions were offered equally prominent positions at another company. It was called "failing up!" It seems that goes for the fashion industry too, as Ghesquière , who was fired from Balenciaga  takes over for the omnipresent Marc Jacobs , as creative director at  Louis Vuitton . Non followers of the fashion industry may not have known Marc Jacobs' connection to  Louis Vuitton  (which we think has come a long way under his leadership). Jimmy Kimmel and Kanye West Sit Down

Image
We're not sure if Kanye West did himself any good with this Jimmy Kimmel sit down. The background  for this awkward appearance is a comedy bit Kimmel aired about West based on an interview with BBC Radio 1. The Conversation Circle thinks if you can't laugh at yourself, then you're taking yourself way too seriously . We find it odd when those who seek fame and celebrity are then bothered by the unpleasant side dishes that come with the main dish. In watching how intense West looks, we're reminded of the television commercials that run selling The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast  on DVD. (Oddly, one of our kids was drawn to the roast and Dean Martin's Variety Show commercials.) Talk about touching a nerve, but they are funny as hell! Freshman 'We Are Men' Canceled

Image
Media sources began predicting " We Are Men "  would be on the chopping block since last week. Well, it's here. CBS pulled the Monday night comedy, about four bachelors, from its schedule. The show was reportedly the lowest rated in-season sitcom premiere for CBS , ever! Wow, that's some record. Considering all of CBS ' testing, why was the show picked up and who was their demo? (Single women touching up their mani/pedis on a Monday night?) So much for networks waiting for DVR, Online and VOD data to come in before moving or canceling new programming. Retailers, E-Stalking is Not the Way to Go

Image
One again one of our members is being stalked on Facebook by a favored retailer using her favorite brand. The member happened to look at a  pair of shoes (of course) yesterday on their site, then went through the usual cookie deleting. Then, sure enough, the shoes showed up on her FB Home page anyway! She is frustrated, annoyed and feels her privacy is being invaded. She does't want to see her browsing history on Facebook. She has made the painful decision not to buy (other retailers carry that brand) from that retailer again. We're left wondering when will retailers realize E-Stalking is a turnoff .   Related:  E-Stalking
