2011 Oscars

Image
Was the 83rd Academy Awards a younger and hipper version? We didn’t think so. In fact, it was boring and tedious at times. We’re also not sure how we felt about hosts, James Franco and Anne Hathaway, who were purportedly chosen because of their appeal to a younger demographic. Franco and Hathaway didn’t seem to have any chemistry between them. Franco rarely looked directly at Hathaway, (who we think performed admirably considering what she had to work with), seemingly preferring a camera or the prompter. We also wondered about the awkward shout-outs to family members. Does being young and appealing mean you answer to your mother and correct your grandmother in front of millions of viewers. It bordered on silly. A simple acknowledgement who have gone a long way.  We think the hosting on Franco’s part was so lacking we, as did the live audience, cheered when Billy Crystal made an appearance. Anyway -- on to what we did like. Best art direction and costume design - Alice In Wonderla

The Oscars!

Image
It is the 83rd annual Academy Awards. Just for the record, the CC wants to make it perfectly clear, we want The King's Speech to win Best Picture. We really love the historical value of this film. We're also pulling for Colin Firth. He's been working in the trenches for years. Let's hope tonight is his night!

It's Chapter 11 for Borders

Image
A lazy (rainy) day at Borders is always something to look forward to. While we're not the internet and coffee crowd, we do like to browse through the books for possible purchase. But then comes the challenge of finding a book that doesn't appear to have been read by 50 people.  Why buy a book if you can read it for free? Isn't that the purpose of a library? We often wondered how the newfangled bookstores made money. Perhaps they are making it on the cafe. When we buy a book we want a fresh copy. No palm prints, please!  While we still shop at Borders, (we do hope they successfully reorganize), it is only for time sensitive purchases. We love the option of eBooks, but it doesn't compare to the feeling of holding a book in your hand.

The Grammy Awards

The tribute to Aretha Franklin was rousing and her appearance was touching. Jennifer Hudson has a fabulous voice and was a great choice to anchor the group of ladies, which included, Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and Yolanda Adams. 'Hey Soul Sister'... we love the sound of that. Congrats! We have a new appreciation for Lady Gaga...There’s classic training behind the theatrics. Kids, pay attention!  We connected with Melissa Lambert’s song, ‘The House That Build Me’. We also like her voice.... And she won! Lady Gaga thanked Whitney Houston was giving her inspiration... yeah, we're liking Lady Gaga more and more.... We're not surprised Letterman introduced Dylan. Gwyneth Paltrow, who knew? THE CHEVY COMMERCIAL WAS A RIOT!  We loved Rihanna's tulle dress (gown)? Esperanza Spalding gave a short, to the point and classy acceptance. How old is she? Class act. Okay, we're a little distracted... time to head to the refrigerator.  We're bac

Oprah on Morning Joe

Image
Just as we were grabbing our morning cup of coffee, and flipping channels, we stumbled on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and quest Oprah. It was an interesting segment. We were delighted to see that Oprah seemed fond of Willie Geist, a perfect replacement for Matt Lauer when he retires, we are too. For us, Willie makes the show tolerable. He is generally unflappable, has a great sense of humor and timing. Oprah, who has 43 shows left to do for her talk show, noted that she watched Morning Joe while on the treadmill. The CC tends to scan the show for interesting topics or guests.  Oprah remains a quiet force and we love her. We wish her luck with OWN, we’re watching.
