Sad Tale Of DailyCandy

Some years ago many of The Conversation Circle members were fans of DailyCandy. It was a trendy interesting, but quick, resource for what was hot and happening.  After a few years, most of us became disinterested. After reading " How NBCUniversal Killed DailyCandy " on New York Magazine.Com, it would seem corporate interests, as it sometimes happens, ruined a good idea. We think, not every good idea has to be a big idea. Sometimes it's the quality and not quantity of what you are doing. But in a society of more and bigger is better, it's not doubt this happened. Perhaps Dany Levy, cofounder of DailyCandy, who was an intern, then the managing editor's assistant at New York Magazine, will have another small, but quality idea!   How NBCUniversal Killed DailyCandy http://t.co/VEZ6JLDTa2 via @Intelligencer — ConversationCircle (@ConversationCir) March 30, 2014

Jon Stewart and Nate Silver Discuss Recent Criticism

The Daily Show's Jon Stewart has fun with Nate Silver , it seems the new FiveThirtyEight.Com is going a little slow, and Silver recently received a few negative reviews from, who, The New York Times' Paul Krugman! Silver handles it well. Related: What's Nate Silver Been Up To? The Daily Show Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes , Indecision Political Humor , The Daily Show on Facebook

Finally Some New Shows for AMC

Image
Good news AMC , the home of nearly departed Mad Men (we're so not excited with the promos) and the departed Breaking Bad , has a bunch of news shows coming down the pike! AMC has also geenlighted its first comedy and is planning more. The new shows include reality and late night, and of course there are dramas, but we're excited to see the quality of the comedies. Looks like AMC is going to lighten up and put the breaks on all that heavy drama or at least mix it up. Vulture has the breakdown:  AMC Working On a Whole Bunch of New Shows

Social Media Not As Strong As Television Promos

Image
Social Media sometimes called "the second screen'' is a powerful tool, but it may generate more interest in new shows rather than show that are returning.  We think part of social media's excitement is the "buzz" factor, which is what you get when something is new and interesting. Check out TVNewsCheck's findings:  Social Media Not As Effective As Promos .

WGA Wants Comcast-Time Warner Merger Blocked

Image
The Writer's Guild of America is painting a not-so-rosy picture of television if the FCC allows the Comcast-Time Warner merger. The WGA filed a brief on Friday urging the FCC to deny the merger citing the control Comcast would have over broadcast and cable networks. The proposed merger would also give Comcast-Warner 30% control of the broadband internet market. The WGA fears such control could lead to networks being forced to agree to "terms and rates set by Comcast" and limit online video competition. The brief also mentions previous anticompetitive behavior, citing Comcast's use of data caps for competing streaming services. We think the Guild has laid out an excellent case against the Comcast-Time Warner proposed merger. Considering the lack of "sufficient" competition due to deregulation and subsequent consolidation through mergers, much of broadcast television and cable is in the hands of a few companies. Ironically the FCC has a web page titled "

Wendell Pierce Joins 'The Odd Couple' Reboot

Image
Wendell Pierce , one of our favorite actors from The Wire,  signed on to CBS' pilot "The Odd Couple" an updated version of the original Neil Simon play, turned movie, turned television show. The pilot is co-written and produced by Matthew Perry . Pierce will portray Teddy, a neurotic cop and weekly game night member at the apartment. In the classic  Odd Couple the weekly game was cards! We're pretty sure that will remain the same in this reboot. Related: CBS Orders New 'Odd Couple' Pilot

Will Amazon's Video-Streaming Device Be An Apple TV Competitor?

Image
The new Amazon device, said to come with apps from companies for streaming music, movies and will have access to Amazon's On Demand store, may hit retail locations as early as April. The  device, will of course, be available online at the company's website. Retail stores rumored to sell the device when it's released are Best Buy and Staples . The device is said to have apps available on Roku and Apple set-top boxes and run on a version of Google Android software. The real question is, will Amazon's device compete with Apple TV .

The Crazy Ones Likely Cancelled

Image
We would be surprised if CBS didn't cancel "The Crazy Ones". Most of our members were a little put-off  by Robin Williams . It's wasn't as if we didn't like Williams, but the show felt a little manic. It made a few of us antsy and we weren't  sure if it was  Williams or a combination of factors. In September The Crazy Ones premiered at 4.0 for adults18-49 and became the season's top-rated comedy. Some media critics pointed to The Crazy's One's big bow being, in large part, attributed to its lead-in "The Big Bang Theory". In October the show ticked up in the ratings and as a vote of confidence, CBS gave the show a full season order. It would seem with the show's ratings not making any significant improvement, even though their time slot swap helped, the show is likely to be cancelled. it's just too crazy!

Newsmagazines Big on Saturday Night

Image
For viewers who are home on a Saturday night, it seems the preference is to watch Newsmagazines. ABC recently joined CBS' "48 Hours" and NBC's "Dateline Mystery" with a news-division program on Saturday, "Nightline Prime" which airs at 9PM. Nightline Prime's debut drew 3.07 million viewers. That was the biggest audience for the time slot since December 2013. Newsmagazines Dominate Saturday Night on Broadcast TV - TVNewser

Missing Malaysian Airplane Puts CNN and Anderson Cooper Ahead Of FNC

In no better case for CNN doing what it does best, Anderson Cooper pulled ahead of FNC's Bill O'Reilly at 8pm in the news demographic on 3 consecutive nights. We've been highly critical of CNN Chief Jeff Zucker's grand experiment and planned shake up for the primetime lineup. However, Copper's success with the Malaysian airline mystery demonstrated viewers turn to CNN for breaking news , absent that where will viewers go? More importantly, will CNN interrupt " Death Row Stories" for breaking news or will the hosts of "Making The Case" Mark Geregos and Sunny Hostin fill in as news anchors? Jimmy Fallon Dips But Still Ahead

Image
The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon has dipped in the ratings as curiosity may have worn off, but Fallon remains in the number one spot.  Fallon's viewership is down sharply since the close of the  Olympics, but there are suggestions that Fallon's high ratings, during his premiere, were inflated by the Olympics. Among adults 18-49, Fallon averaged 1.71 million, compared to 931,000 for Kimmel and 705,000 for Letterman.

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same - Bill Cosby Is Still Relevant: VIDEO

Even a throwaway line at his intimate SXSW  (South by Southwest Festival in Austin) show drew a big laugh for veteran comedian Bill Cosby . It's amazing how Cosby has managed to remain relevant and part of the comedy conversation for close to 50 years. Over the years Cosby has been criticized for making comments some community leaders felt were not helpful. Cosby has also spoken out against comedians who feel the need to use "vulgar" language to be funny. What ever you think about Cosby, he's still funny and he keeps it clean. Here in a video titled "Chocolate Cake for Breakfast" Cosby gives us a vignette of husband and wife roles. It's funny and still relatable in 2014! Sometimes Acting Isn't What's It's Cracked Up To Be

Image
In an interview with Glamour Magazine Lena Dunham , creator and star of Girls , indicates she might be happier sticking to writing rather than acting. Dunham, who recently hosted SNL  (and while funny), did not give the show a ratings boost. Writing and acting in a show, especially when you've achieved a measure of success, is probably extremely stressful. If you add to that the pressure of being a role model, it's a lot to balance. The happy medium may really be, as Dunham reportedly said, "putting the words in the mouths of other actresses". We think as a writer Dunham can have the same impact without losing the positive role model status she enjoys with a "generation of young women". After all, how many women are creating and executive producing primetime shows? MSNBC's Ronan Farrow Just Not Translating?

We didn't hit on the "translation" part, but we did question Farrow's persona projection and MSNBC's responsibility to brand and promote Farrow's show .   However , Variety's  Andrew Wallenstein seems to point to formatting as the main issue and failures at MSNBC. Isaiah Washington Making Guest Appearance on 'Grey's Anatomy'

ABC announced Isaiah Washington , who had a pivotal role on "Grey's Anatomy" some 7 years ago, will return to the show for a guest appearance. As you may recall, Washington was fired from the show after making an anti-gay slur that was directed at a fellow cast member.  On Huffington Post Live  Washington discusses how he's been devastated financially. When Washington was a regular cast member we were consumed with Washington and Sandra Oh's characters and relationship.  Too bad Oh is leaving. Hopefully Washington's return will provide the closure that we, Dr. Burke and Dr. Yang need. The episode does not have an air date yet. We'll be tuned in. Brutal But Honest Review of 'Late Night With Seth Meyers'

Upfront NBCUniversal will, for the first time, have all of its entertainment networks give their 2014 Upfront presentations during the traditional week in May. The presentations will kickoff with NBC Entertainment network, followed by Telemundo, then a "unique presentation" by NBCUniversal's Cable Entertainment Group, which will combine its "family of networks into one presentation".  In the past each network held its own presentation to advertisers from February to May (pre-Upfront). Experimenting With CNN's 10 PM Hour

Image
Looks like CNN will begin its grand experiment with the 10PM hour. The cable station has seen its ratings drop with no end in sight, and CNN Chief Jeff Zucker walked in the door vowing to shake up primetime. It's hard to see how adding new programming at 10PM will help the primetime ratings. Sure you have to start somewhere, but a show hosted by Mark Geregos and Sunny Hostin "Making The Case". It's difficult enough to listen to Geregos and Hostin bicker when they're panelist, who wants to tune in for that regularly? Does Zucker think they have chemistry? We'll also be treated to Death Row Stories, whatever that means. If we want to go to jail we can watch MSNBC on Friday nights! They have the jail thing down! We think CNN is becoming confusing. Clutch Crazy Revisit

Image
Fashion Forward  Coach With spring in the air some of our members are warming up to the idea of carrying a clutch ( purse ). Does that mean we've soured on the  ubiquitous tote? Not really, but who wants to lug around a tote (even if your life is in it) when the temperature starts to rise.  Some women prefer clutches (or no purse at all). However some of our members have found the clutch to be awkward to maneuver. Like when you have to use the restroom or shake a hand while holding something in your other hand! The clutch is actually designed to be carried in your hand or literally clutched under your arm. Carrying a clutch could help develop your muscles, since clutching a small purse under your arm requires constant pressure! The clutch was also originally designed to be carried in the evening for dressy occasions, however they have become popular as day bags . Trendsetters say it was the influence of Kate Middleton,  who carries clutches (a princess doesn'

Chanel Fall/Winter Collection Youthful and Laid-back

Image
Brand Talk We were intrigued by Karl Lagerfeld's transformation of the Grand Palais into a Chanel-themed supermarket for the  Chanel  Fall/Winter RTW collection 2014/15. Quite frankly we weren't sure what we were looking at, when we first saw photos of the extravaganza, until we saw the tweed and it registered, it's Chanel! Leggings with holes in them, glitter on them or under skirts. We suppose this collection will appeal to a more youthful crowd with money to burn. However there are very wearable clothes for women who love the "Chanel" look, but want causal (comfortable) clothes they can, say, shop in. Apparently some of Chanel's Facebook fans find the collection disconcerting. One fan questioned the continuation of sneakers and designs Chanel would never approve of. No matter what you think of the collection, the internet is buzzing about the Chanel runway show! Isn't that all that matters?  Anyway, judge for yourself: Welcome to Chanel's sho

Oscar Selfie Sorta Spontaneous

Image
Advertising and Promotion It seems the now famous Oscar selfie , that included A-list stars, was part of a "sponsorship" package for Samsung . Okay, most of us got the "product placement" part of Samsung's deal, but was the selfie spontaneous? It seems Ellen DeGeneres planned to do selfies during the broadcast, then had to be trained on how-to-use the Samsung Galaxy during rehearsals. Oscars 2014 Was Relatable For The Most Part

Image
The Conversation Circle had fun watching the Oscars 2014 last night. We were a little disappointed that the writing for the monologue wasn't more evident. It seemed Ellen DeGeneres was left to do a lot of ad-libbing, which made it her performance feel a little too low-key to us. We did like DeGeneres' teasing of Hollywood itself and the lines Robert DeNiro delivered when presenting the Writing Adapted Screenplay award. DeGeneres' " selfie " (that crashed Twitter) in the A-list section of the auditorium was fun and highlighted her brand of sunny and silly, but DeGeneres lost us on the pizza. Did that mean the telecast was dragging on? Overall critics felt DeGeneres' performance was flat or uneven, but we thought she was fine.
