Saks Fifth Avenue looking to 'Scandal' for Rebirth

Fever Broken on Breaking Bad

Image
We made it to the end of Breaking Bad. The finale, for some of us, was a little sad. As much as Walter deserved to die, we hated to see him go. We were rooting for him to turn himself in, but knew this would not be realistic for the character Vince Gilligan created. Having Walter return to the lab to collapse and die was truly symbolic. It reaffirmed that he became "Heisenberg" because he liked it. It was like Jekyll and Hyde. There was no road back. Only death would kill that demon (Heisenberg.) It was a relief  that the troubled Jesse, after paying for his mistakes as a virtual slave to a drug he consumed and pushed, was given a reprieve and Walter was the one to give it to him.  It seemed like a recognition from Walter, not Heisenberg, that he was responsible for some of the destruction in Jesse's life too. Jesse finally got that road back and his character's joy and relief indicated he would not walk it again. In the end, Walter knew that Heisenberg must die.

Big Bang for 'The Crazy Ones'

Image
CBS' new comedy The Crazy Ones , premiering at 4.0 for adults 18-49,   became the season's top-rated comedy, beating out NBC's The Michael J. Fox Show, which bowed at 2.1.  However, The Crazy Ones ' big bow could be attributed to its lead-in, The Big Bang Theory, which ran back-to-back episodes averaging 5.3 and 5.8 in the ratings. The coming weeks will really determine if The Crazy Ones is truly a hit.

Perso-Professional, Shopping Fiscal  You may recall our  Can Better Apps Increase Profits for Retailers  post several weeks ago, well we have an update. Our time pressed member has decided to return the boots she invested so much time into procuring. She has assured us it has nothing to do with any lingering annoyance from the tedious purchase, but rather the difficulty of buying booties online. After investing a weekend going through her wardrobe, the boots don't work with anything she currently owns or with what she imagined they would. Anyway, she's floated the idea of having retailers show all booties on a model. The advantage is having a stylist show you the proper dress or skirt length that would work! Now on to the return process. The retailer does allow in-store returns.

Primetime Emmy Conversation Continued...

Image
Guess we were still in shock when we posted the 65th Primetime Emmy Conversation , but it was surprising "House of Cards" didn't win for outstanding drama series and equally surprising that Jeff Daniels won for best drama actor. Some of us have watched a few episodes of "Newsroom," but it has not caught on with any of us. We also forgot to mention, Bobby Cannavale who won outstanding supporting actor in a drama series. That was so deserved. His portrayal of a homicidal maniac on Boardwalk Empire last season was gripping. You wanted to turn away, but couldn't!

2013 Emmy's Neil Patrick Harris Opening Monologue

65th Primetime Emmys Conversation

Image
Once again The Conversation Circle grabbed the Chinese food and watched the Emmys.... Neil Patrick Harris  opened the show with a reference to modern TV. The opening bit had Harris trying to binge watch the Emmy nominated shows. His monologue included how young people watch television on their phones and the variety of programming available and the ease of getting it. The opening wasn't that funny, but spoke to the future of television. The whole bit of former hosts joining Harris on stage was lost on us.  BEST BITS for us. We loved Kevin Spacey's (Frank Underwood) bit from House of Cards. Now that was funny!  Julia Louis-Dreyfus' acceptance speech, which included a Veep gag (in character) with Tony Hale , was funny! LEFT WONDERING BY Jon Hamm who walked on stage as if not wanting to be typecast. (Perhaps it's for a role.) He looked like Grizzly Adams, and Robin Williams' tribute to Jonathan Winters. It was a little odd. We hope this isn't foreboding

The Long Goodbye For Mad Men

Image
AMC, following their strategy for the final season of  Breaking Bad,  has decided to air Mad Men's  (which launched their Original Series brand) final season in two installments. The first 7 episodes (The Beginning) will run in spring 2014 and the final 7 (The End of An Era) will air spring 2015. Creator Matthew Weiner believes the two installments for the final season will allow him to create a "more elaborate story." We're not sure if it feels like prolonging the death of someone who is near and dear to you or if it's the feeling of not wanting to let go. Bad boy Don Draper has become part of conscious, as have the other cast members. We discuss the shows as they air and the day after. We hope Weiner will find a life for some of these characters somewhere (as Sex in the City did). We want to know if Don Draper becomes an ultra-right republican in his old age. Face-Lift For 'Today' Show, But The Elephant is Still In The Room

Image
New president of NBC News, Deborah Turness hopes to recover viewers that were lost to GMA for more than a year now. In private Ms. Turness has liken the face-lift to "the joy of reuniting with an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend." The problem with that analogy is, sometimes you're just over that old flame and there's no going back! Viewers may be turned off by Matt Lauer (it is unfortunate) and have no chemistry or connection to Savannah Guthrie. Ms. Turness may be avoiding the difficult task of making talent changes (Instead she added Carson Daly, former host of MTV's "TRL".), and hoping viewers won't notice the elephant is still in the room.  Related: Matt Lauer Revisits Ann Curry Debacle , Matt Lauer Leaving Today? Can Better Apps Increase Profits for Retailers?

Mainly because we have several members who love to bargain shop and a few who only shop online. Today our time-pressed online shopper tried to make a quick purchase, on her iPad, for a pair of boots (no longer available at her preferred retailer) from Bloomingdales. First she tried to use the Bloomingdales app she download (previously) onto her iPad. After waiting and waiting for the "searched" item to load, she tried to input her loyalist information, then got: information could not be found. She called the 800 number (as directed) only to be told the information was correct. She went back to the iPad. Nope. Didn't work. At this point she deleted the app and turned to her computer. The long and short of it was, it took numerous attempts to make one purchase. From our experience, great apps increase the likelihood of an online shopper making a purchase

Image
Wow. We had an interesting story about online shopping with NM... We'll save it for another day! We're wondering how this will change the company. Luxury store or not, some of us have gotten great deals at Neiman Marcus! We hope that won't change. The New York Times' Deal Book reports on the sale.

'Bethenny' Debuting Today Is All Bethenny

Image
We've been watching Bethenny since her Housewives  days and became fond of her "tell it like it is" personality. But we're not sure if  we'll follow her to Talk. One media outlet referred to 'Bethenny' as quite the carnival. Carnivals are good!   In some markets Bethenny will lead out Wendy Williams. We're not sure if this will be too much of a good thing:  'Bethenny' Debuting Today Is All Bethenny .

Miley Cyrus Not in Vogue?

Image
There's buzz in the fashion world that Anna Wintour,  the inspiration for "The Devil Wears Prada," and star of "The September Issue" has canceled Cyrus' December cover issue. Wintour's decision stems from Miley Cyrus' raunchy performance on MTV VMAs.  Is this more  Shock and Outrage ?  We're a little surprised that Ms. Wintour would take this stance. Vogue may have seen the same profit from Cyrus' cover that MTV got from her performance.  Just an aside, one of our members said she gets the oddest looks whenever she carries her Prada handbag!

Bruno Mars to Superbowl Halftime

Bruno Mars , a grammy winner, has been confirmed to headline the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show. Mars, an inspiration to many young performers and fans for his talent as a  songwriter, singer and producer,  has also demonstrated perseverance as his initial stint with a record label was unsuccessful. We suspect Mars will bring a much younger demo (Is this the new Pepsi generation?) to the NFL halftime show than previous acts.

Fashion Frenzy Week

Image
Fashion Week has us in a fashion frenzy. You may remember our post  Fashion Meets Recycling . Well, we've found a great resource to enhance our vintage knowledge: The Vintage Fashion Guild .  It's a great site. And as they say, nothing is "new" in fashion. It's a fun site.

Simply Bill

We were just talking about Bill Cunningham in our Watching Fashion  post. Bill's latest video is, Simple Does It. He's so right!

Marathon Run for Candice Tells All

Image
Who knew? Sorry, some years back several of us were Divine Design devotees. However, when HGTV pulled back on their design shows and pulled Candice's show we had little reason to tune in. Today a member was flipping channels and noticed Candice Tells All. Really? We're not sure about programming at HGTV or when promos run for what show, but we were lost!

RoboCop:2028

We love futuristic movies! This is a cool trailer for Jose Padilha's remake of the 1987 sci-fi movie, RoboCop. It opens February 7.

Watching Fashion

Image
In honor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Spring 2014 , we've decided to take the weekend off and check out fashion related documentaries that are available on iTunes. (Of course we're watching them on the computer!) Topping our list, a Conversation Circle favorite, Bill Cunningham New York . We're also excited about Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel . Ms. Vreeeland expressed the sentiment of wanting to be where the action was. Her impact on the fashion industry is undeniable. Unfortunately on iTunes Ms. Vreeland's documentary must be purchased. Other docs include (YSL)  L'amour and Valentino: The Last Emperor . Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's caught our eye, but an iTunes reviewer called them out for grammatical errors. We'll reserve judgement!

E-Stalking

Image
Okay, we're on a shopping roll. We've been all over the internet trying to beef up our fall looks. Most of us are just adding pieces.  Some, due to weight loss or gain, are replacing. Along with shopping, most in The Conversation Circle regularly use Facebook. It's a little break between the hunt for the perfect item and an easy way to get through that never-ending NewsFeed! However, we've noticed the items we've left in the retailer's shopping bag are following us to Facebook. When it first happened to one of our members last year, she was truly gobsmacked.  It took her a few minutes to realize that item in the ad was the same item she just put in a shopping bag, but didn't purchase. She went back to the retailer's site to confirm.  In the end, she said it was a little creepy. Most of us are very familiar with E-stalking now, however some members in the CC have said they've decided not to shop with retailers who follow them around the internet. St

Suede Persuasion

Image
In a recent Fashion Forward post, Bound by Leather , we discussed our desire for a leather dress. Now some in The Conversation Circle are on the hunt for suede pants. When fall approaches, there's something that drives us toward refined tweed, plaid or tartan blazers and suede pants.  We just think it so classic.  Interestingly, there's plenty of tartan this season, but the inventory for suede pants is lacking. Sure there are plenty of suede "leggings," but there are hardly any suede pants at the retailers we frequent. We don't find anything classic or classy about leggings. (Perhaps if we had Audrey Hepburn's figure we would.) Anyway, a quick check of the web revealed a pair of pants that were way out of our budget, a pair in plus sizes and Ployvore turned up two pair, Valentino (in another lifetime we could manage this) and Ralph Lauren (a straight leg that straddles the legging line). The problem is, not everyone looks good in a straight leg. Some of us ne

Downton Abbey Season 4 Trailer

We can't wait for the return of Downton Abbey. If you missed the trailer, here it is!...
