Television NBC News recently announced that Megyn Kelly , who officially joins NBC News in May, will host a new show that will air in what is the morning franchise, " Today " show's third hour. " Today's Take " at 9AM is currently hosted by Tamron Hall and Al Roker.  Hall has been co-hosting for nearly 3 years and also hosts the program MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall . We're sure there are those in the media who are enjoying the pitting of Hall against Kelly, and it's probably good for ratings, but as proven a few years ago (with the Ann Curry debacle) a significant portion of Today's viewers , are sure to be offended if Hall is seen to have been pushed out in favor of Kelly.  It may be wise for NBC brass to tread lightly if they think having Kelly to hang over Hall's head during

In Memoriam  We've lost the actress who could "turn the world on with her smile".  Mary Tyler Moore died today due to complications from pneumonia. Moore endeared herself to many of us beginning with her role as Laura Petrie on the Dick Van Dyke Show . Check out the tribute below.

Awards After last year's fiasco, which saw many performers boycotting  the awards show, the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are not "so white". A record number of African Americans, Viola Davis, Dev Patel, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Ruth Nega have been nominated for acting. A few years ago we were talking up Alec Baldwin's new talker " Up Late With Alec Baldwin ", scheduled to air on Friday nights, as a replacement for the rerun laden "Lockup" . As we all know Baldwin's show was cancelled, in part due to his brand and low ratings. Cancellation of 'Up Late with Alec Baldwin' Puts Viewers Back in 'Lock Up' It seemed MSNBC was more than happy to return to its lazy programming and send its few viewers back to jail with more exciting reruns of the prison series .  However   our extended stay in prison ended as the show's 25th and final season began with " Lockup Wichita ", which aired on January 14. The show is reportedly being shopped around and the series is available on Netflix .

As the First Lady  Michelle Obama  prepares to leave the White House, we saw this cool 'look back',  produced by NBC News, being shared on social media. Parks & Rec Lands FLOUTS for Season Finale It reminded us of how much Mrs. Obama brought to the job of First Lady and had fun doing it. By being a part of the cultural environment most Americans consume, Mrs. Obama brought a "down to earth" approachable quality to her position as First Lady of The United States. Awards This year's Golden Globe Awards was just a tiny bit controversial, but overall it was a great night. Jimmy Fallon's opening monologue was filled with biting remarks directed at President-elect Trump.  Meryl Streep's  (We just realized this is the first time we mentioned Streep in our blog!) acceptance speech for the  Cecil B. DeMille Award  was received well at the awards, but sparked a Twitter attack from Trump. Of course we love  Viola Davis as an artist and "Fences" is captivating, (we had the honor of seeing the play on Broadway), but Davis' bright yellow ( Michael Kors ) dress stole the night for us! Television A few of us almost exclusively watch television via AppleTV . For the few, but growing, Apps that are available for news and entertainment, advertising is not consistent. Long periods of "Stay tuned... Your content will return..." or "Stay tuned... The live stream will return shortly", (and shortly seems like forever), is a little boring and obviously lost revenue opportunities. For the apps that have ads in place, some media outlets are running the same ads over and over! So we found Variety's article about ratings giant, Nielsen , intriguing. It seems in the changing landscape of ways viewers consume television, and how to best  measure that viewership, is giving Nielsen a bit of trouble. There appears to be a migration of former Fox News hosts moving to MSNBC and NBC .  Greta Van Susteren will host a new show, airing 6pm on MSNBC, called "For The Record". Van Susteren joins another former Fox family member,  Megyn Kelly, who will be hosting an NBC weekday and Sunday news show. The emphasis appears to be on attracting seasoned journalist who have a built-in audience they can bring with them. MSNBC and NBC also appear to be making a "right" turn, (signing up Van Susteren and Kelly would give that distinct impression), perhaps just in times to capitalize on changes in the nation's capitol. What we're wondering is, will Ari Melber and Steve Kornacki (who previously hosted his own show)   be utilized for anything other than fill-ins! Melber and Kornacki appeal to a younger audience and would be wise hosting choices, as is Joy Reid , to build a millennial audience.
