Awards After last year's fiasco, which saw many performers boycotting  the awards show, the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are not "so white". A record number of African Americans, Viola Davis, Dev Patel, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Ruth Nega have been nominated for acting.
